ICE-BREAKER Final report

Winter stress management is a key issue for many Nordic golf facilities. A warmer climate gives us a new type of winter damages caused by melting water and ice cover. Ice damages could delay the opening of the golf course by more than 4 weeks which equals a cost of about 400 -600 000 SEK per year. The overall aim of the ICE-BREAKER project was to obtain a better understanding and improve strategies to prevent and repair damage caused by prolonged ice cover and meltwater on golf courses and other grasslands.  Revised fact sheet
– Turfgrass spring stresses

In this fact sheet, we discuss what happens in the spring when plants start to grow after a long winter. New results indicate that photoinhibition and oxidative stress in plant cells can be a contributing factor to winter and early spring kill. Such stresses are due to the combination of strong sunlight and low temperature when the grass emerges after snow and/ or ice melt.

Find the latest knowledge regarding spring stress and the difficult transition into a new growing season. So far there are updated fact sheets in English, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish. To Fact Sheet
