Voices from the ITRC 2025 Conference in Japan

International Turfgrass Research Conference is arranged every fourth year and is the world´s leading turfgrass conference. 421 participants from 30 countries gathered in Karuizawa, just over an hour's train ride from Tokyo, Japan, eager to learn about the latest research in turfgrass, make new friends and colleagues, and experience Japanese culture. About 180 papers were presented and discussed and more than ten papers were based on STERF´s projects and activities. Watch and listen to:

 

- Ruth Mann, Vice President of ITS, the International Research Society, as she sums up the conference and looks ahead.  

 

- Scott McElroy, Auburn University College of Agriculture, began his research into robotic mowers by starting a company with his sons.  

 

- Trygve Aamlid, NIBIO Landvik, Norway, about the research regarding the STERF-project ROBO-Golf.

 

- Doug Soldat, University of Wisconsin-Madison, about net climate impact at golf courses - and what role sand plays.  

 

- Kenichiro Fujisaka, Japanese Society of Science, focuses his research on schoolyard turfing for popularization in Japan.

Call for proposals – apply now!

STERF has reserved about 3,5 million SEK (€315 000) per year for 2026, 2027 and 2028 for new research projects. In this call for proposals, STERF has decided to prioritize research and development within all four new R&D programmes:

·        Winter stress and integrated pest management

·        Sustainable use of natural resources in golf course management

·        Multifunctional golf courses and ecosystem services – landscape perspective

·        New technologies for a sustainable future

 

Deadline for application is October 1st  2025. More information as well as instructions for those wishing to apply for funding for research projects can be found in the link below.
